Panic in the Bronx: Is it time to fire Aaron Boone?

After an embarrassing (to put it lightly!) sweep by the arch rival Red Sox over the weekend, serious question marks with this Yankees squad were put under the microscope. The team can’t hit, the base running decisions are straight out of the ‘Bad News Bears,’ and the pitching has been spotty at best. It’s well past Memorial Day and the excuse of “It’s Early” are fading fast. We have enough of a sample size to seriously ask “Is it time to move on from Aaron Boone?”

Yes, Boone is great with the players, but this team lacks a toughness like no other Yankee squad before it. Stanton is a microcosm of the teams toughness; a player who can’t stay healthy, and even WHEN he’s on the field, he’s an overpaid DH who exemplifies the 3 outcome approach of too many of the other Yanks. Stanton’s game management load would even make some NBA players blush. Staton isn’t alone, but too many pats on the back for these players and “we will get ‘em tomorrow” press conferences for it not to rub off in the clubhouse. Teams can often take on the personality of their skipper, and this team is a bunch of sweethearts.

Anyone miss this guy? Say what you want about Billy, but he was a tough SOB and a winner. Sadly, they don’t make them like Billy anymore. But, maybe the Yanks should dip into the past for the next Manager? A team under Buck would certainly be tough, and I think a new voice in the clubhouse is exactly what this teams needs.

Now to be fair, Boone does not deserve all the blame in the Bronx. Brian Cashman isn’t exactly an innocent bystander here. Cashman has been doing it “his way” since “The Boss” checked out, and only has one World Series title in the past 11 years to show for it. Old George certainly would not have stood for this, however, I don’t see Cashman going anywhere anytime soon.

Before the season started, I chose the Yanks to win the World Series. The Yankees flat out stink right now. And, while, there are more than just managerial problems here (flawed roster, injures, underperformance, etc), if the Bombers have any chance at turning this around, Boone has to go… 2003 was a long time ago…

So sound the alarm, the Bronx is at defcon 1. It’s well past panic time. It’s time to say goodbye to the Boone era forever.
