Each week I will give a quick rundown of what went down in NY sports. This is for people who care about sports, but not all that much, but still want to know what the heck happened and sound somewhat in the know when talking to their friends.
NY Yankees: Could you imagine what deGrom would do to this lineup? A perfect game with at least 22 strikeouts is a very real possibility. The only good news for this sad squad was that Jay Bruce announced that he will retire after Sunday’s game. The week actually started off with a new car smell as recent addition, Rougned Odor, propelled the Yankees to an actual win against the Rays last Sunday. It was their second win in a row at the time and things were looking up. Was Odor the spark the team needed to get out of their early season funk? No. They stunk (pun intended) the rest of the week, losing 4 in a row and falling to an American League worst 5-9. One could find hope in the fact that the 2019 Yankees also started 5-9 and ended up with 103 wins, but that team started the season with half the team hurt. This team in contrast is healthy. They just suck right now is all.
NY Mets: Well, well, well. The Mets have come alive. They also seem to lead the world in shortened games. 4 of the last 5 games played failed to reach the 9th inning. This doesn’t include the 4 recent postponed games. But despite all the bumps in scheduling, the Mets now sit atop the NL East. deGrom fell one batter short of tying Tom Seaver’s MLB record for most Ks in a row when he struck out 9 in a row against the Rockies today. He even got the W, though his batting average “dropped” to .571. Guy is Superman.
NY Rangers: In my mind the Rangers are now chasing the Islanders for 4th place in the East and that last playoff spot. They continue to play extremely well, having now gone 7-1-2 in their last 10. The team in front of them, the Bruins, however, are playing just as well, especially after adding Taylor Hall at the trade deadline. It’s gonna be tough to gain any ground the Bruins. Congrats to Pavel Buchnevich, who made Rangers history today against the Devils, by becoming the 1st Ranger to score a hat trick on his birthday.
NY lslanders: Are the Islanders looking back over their shoulders at this point? Possibly. After 2 straight loses to the Bruins, they now hold 3rd place in the East by 2 points. The Rangers stand 8 points back, but are coming on strong down the stretch. The Isles are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Three more matchups against the Rangers remain this season with 6 points up for grabs.
NY Knicks: How does 5 wins in a row sound? Sounds like 1994 to me! Well, that may be a stretch, but certainly equivalent to the Linsanity days. The Knicks now sit in 6th place in the Eastern Conference. Barring some kinda Isaiah Thomas sighting collapse, this team will make the playoffs. These are exciting times!
Brooklyn Nets: The somewhat shorthanded Nets continue to put up a ton of points game after game. Only that weird game against an even more depleted Lakers squad so a lackluster offensive showing. Aldridge’s brief stint with the Nets came to an abrupt halt this week due to health scare and sudden retirement announcement. I wish him well. The Nets, winners of 7 of their last 10, remain 1 game behind the Sixers in the Eastern Conference.
NY Giants: It’s all about who the Giants will take with the 11th pick. Will they add to the WR corps and draft a WR? Will they get a desperately needed Edge rusher? Or get a top OL to help protect Danny and allow him some time to actually throw the ball? The other news this week was that the Giants players said they won’t be joining the voluntary workouts that start on Monday. They aren’t alone in that regard. NY Jets: A lot less intrigue on the Jets’ side of things, at least with their 1st pick at #2. That will be BYU QB Zach Wilson. Jet players also joined teams that will be skipping the voluntary workouts due to COVID concerns.
