In case you missed it last week (and quite frankly, who didn’t): Each week (hopefully) I will giving my quick read rundown of what went down in NY sports. This is for people who care about sports, but not all that much, but still want to know what the heck happened and sound somewhat in the know when talking to their friends.
NY Yankees: Yuck. I really don’t need to say much more than that, but I guess I will anyway. I know that the Yankees have gotten off to slow starts in the past and are certainly more than capable of turning things around in a hurry, but my goodness, this team is all but unwatchable right now. A ton of players LOB, no clear leadership, and just a lack of “team” play. Torres is lost at SS and at the plate. Bruce, Hicks and Stanton are each good for at least 1-2 K’s a game. And German has already been sent to the team’s alternate training site. Did I mention, yuck?
NY Mets: You really have to feel for deGrom. 21 K’s through 2 starts so far. 0.64 ERA. And he’s batting .600. But he has gotten 2 total runs of support through 2 starts and sits 0-1 with 1 no-decision. Sound familiar? Lindor has gotten off to a slow start at currently sports a .176 avg. The Mets also had some controversy/good fortune this week with a mysterious over the heart of the plate called strike three turned Conforto elbow-guard caress walk-off HBP play. Instant replay review, under current rules, wasn’t allowed to declare that Conforto should have been called out anyway as a HBP in the strike zone. The Ump blew the call, but hey, the Mets will take it.
NY Rangers: The Rangers now have 5 games in a row of win, then lose, then win, then lose… Unfortunately, they will need to change this pattern to win, win, win, lose, win, win, win, lose, if they are to catch the Bruins who are 5 points up with 2 games in hand. And those pesky Flyers have now jumped 1 point ahead of the Rangers in the standings, despite having a -24 goal differential on the season. Colin Blackwell of all people has now scored in 3 straight games and is helping to keep the Ranger’s hopes alive. 17 games is all that remain in this shortened season.
NY lslanders: Despite a lackluster performance against the Rangers Friday night that saw Ranger goalie Alexander Georgiev continue his surprising dominance of the Islanders (7-1 in 8 starts), the Isles remain hot and are tied for 1st in the Eastern Division. A trade for Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the Devils is believed to help put the Isles over the top.
NY Knicks: After losing 5 of the last 6, the Knicks turned the table by actually completing a furious comeback victory instead of giving up one. Down 13 points midway through the 4th quarter to the Grizzlies Friday night, Barrett, Randle, and Burks came alive to force OT and win it. Maybe this propels the team back above .500? They currently cling to a 1 game lead in the 8th spot over the Pacers. A date with Lebron and the Lakers looms this Monday night.
Brooklyn Nets: The Nets were winners of 7 of the last 8 (including a 2 point win against their Mid-town rivals) before the Lebron-less and AD-less Lakers came to town. The game might have lacked some stars, but it didn’t lack any fireworks. Both Kyrie for the Nets and Dennis Schroder for the Lakers were ejected after a heated exchange in the 3rd Q. This seemed to elevate the Lakers though and they ended up winning fairly easily. If this is indeed a preview of the NBA finals as many predict, it should be a fun one.
NY Giants: It was a pretty quiet week for Gmen last week. So much so, that Eli Manning seemed to be the main story. Whether it was Eli’s juggling skills or the call for him and Peyton to start their own sitcom, Eli seemed to be everywhere (except on the field of course).
NY Jets: The Jets however, had a BIG week. QB Sam Darnold was traded to the Panthers for a 2021 6th-round pick, plus 2022 2nd- and 4th-round picks. So thus ends the up and down, but mostly down Sam Darnold era. The Zach Wilson era is about to begin. And I’m sure the Jets will bring in a veteran QB to help Zach along the way. Darnold in Carolina inherits a plethora of offensive weapons, though all he really has to do is hand it off or dump it off to CMC. Some say the Panthers should still draft Fields at QB and let the 2 battle it out for the starting job. We will see.
