Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there and happy first official day of summer.
Brooklyn Nets: A funny thing happened on the way to the Championship… And by “funny” I mean “disaster” for Nets fans. And by “disaster” I mean injuries to Harden and Kyrie. Even though Harden did play, he clearly wasn’t himself. His presence did inspire, however. Yet, inspiration and absolutely heroic efforts from Durant were not enough to get past the Bucks. Sports is a game of inches and in the Nets case, millimeters, as Durant’s game-tying shot at the end of regulation in Game 7 was mere millimeters away from being a game-winning 3. What could have been. Nets fans now must look forward to next year and hope that the big 3 will all be healthy and on the court in the playoffs.
NY Knicks: Well here we are at the Zion to the Knicks rumors phase. It sorta makes sense doesn’t it? You could see it on Zion’s face when the Knicks lost the lottery a few years ago. He wanted to go to NY. Currently, he has his former Duke teammate and buddy, RJ Barrett, waiting for him. Immanuel Quickley is also a friend. And it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Zion would prefer to play for the current CoY Thibodeau than the soon-to-be-named 3rd coach for the Pelicans in the last three years. Yes, conjecture can be fun.
NY Islanders: Holy miracle save Mr. Pulock! And smart, as Ryan used his glove to push aside the puck rather than cover it in the crease, which would have resulted in a penalty-shot. The result was robbing former-Ranger Ryan McDonaugh of the game-tying goal and the Isles evening the series with the Lightning at two games a piece. Barzal has come alive and has now scored a goal in two-straight as the Isles continue to try to find ways to slow down Brayden Point, ways to beat the best goalie in hockey today, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and ways to win this exciting series.
NY Rangers: Welcome to the team, Gerard Gallant. Gallant’s main claim to fame was winning the 2018 Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. That was the year the expansion Golden Knights made it to the friggin Stanley Cup finals. Boy was I pissed that year. Here I was suffering through another crappy Ranger’s season and this brand new team finishes with 109 points in the regular season and got to go to Finals. Let’s hope Gallant brings the magic to this young Ranger’s squad.
NY Mets: Losers of their last 4 out of five games, and with deGrom a bit hobbled and need of a rest, the Mets still somehow find themselves with a 4-game lead in the NL East. The highlight of the week was Lindor’s 5-RBI breakout game against the Nats last Saturday in a 5-1 victory. Met’s pitching though still got Schwarbered this week. But the big picture revolves around the league’s best pitcher (and hitter) and him getting some rest.
NY Yankees: The Yankees have once again swung the pendulum and have now won 5 of their last 6 games. And though closer, Chapman, has been shaky of late, (hmmmm, get him his tack back please), the Yankees have been enjoying a resurgence of one Mr. Gary Sanchez, some finely hitting by Gio Urshela (even after taking a bat shard in the eye, ouch), and a record tying 3 triple plays on the season. This last one was of the game saving, and game ending variety. The Yankees are now 5 games over .500 but still trail the Sux by 4.5 in the AL East.
NY Giants/NY Jets: Summer break is upon us as both teams’ spring camps have ended. Training camp is set to open late July. Really looking forward that first pre-season game when we get a small glimpse of the starters and what is what.
