Each week (hopefully) I will giving my quick read rundown of what went down in NY sports. This is for people who care about sports, but not all that much, but still want to know what the heck happened and sound somewhat in the know when talking to their friends.
NY Yankees: After getting swept by the Rays and a two game split with the Braves, the Yankees found a winning formula: Fall behind 3-0 in the 1st to Cleveland. This worked two games in a row before Cole put forth a mastery today in striking out 11 batters. The result: A three-game win streak. Boone’s one-on-one chat with slumping, non-hustling Torres proved immediately beneficial and woke up the sleeping giant. At least for one game. Mikey Ford got called up to play 1st base as we all said goodbye to Jay Bruce. Overall, a nice four-win week for the Yankees as they now show some signs of Bomber life, including a two HR game from Stanton Friday night.
NY Mets: Other strong pitching efforts from Stroman last Sunday and a majestic 15 K, complete game from Marvel character deGrom (who is also batting .545 btw), it was a pretty crappy week for the Mets. The low of course was the 16-4 drubbing at the hands of the Cubs Wednesday. Lindor continues to struggle at the plate, batting a paltry .207. In happier news, Willie Mays became the first player to receive the Baseball Digest’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Congrats Mr. Mays!
NY Rangers: The Rangers couldn’t make up any ground this week on the Bruins or Islanders thanks to a two-game slide against the Islanders and Flyers Tuesday and Thursday. This ended a four-game win streak. They did bounce back in game two against the Flyers, but time is running short (only eight games remain). They sit six points back from the Bruins, who also have two games in hand. We got to see Zac Jones make his NHL debut Thursday night, albeit in limited action. Zac marks the 6th Ranger rookie to see the ice this season. I like seeing these rooks getting some ice time and building experience and confidence. This will bode well for next season (which is where our attention must now shift).
NY lslanders: The highlight of this topsy turvy week for the Isles was their 6-1 beatdown of the Rangers on Tuesday night. They couldn’t ride this momentum though as they ended the week with two L’s against the first place Caps. They are now three points ahead of the Bruins in third place in the East and have a nine point cushion over the Rangers. They are essentially in the playoffs.
NY Knicks: Nine! And no, I’m not speaking German. That’s nine wins in a row! Nine!. The Knicks! Nine! Fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks! They have 34 wins. That’s one less than the Lakers. This is an incredible run. And one that is really fun to watch. From Randle’s MVP warranted chants to Quickley’s energy off the bench; fun friggin times. Stephen A. Smith is fired up too. Barrett is playing great. Noel is blocking shots. D. Rose is clicking. Bullock is swishing more than missing. This is just really great stuff from this team right now. The world is a better place when the Knicks are good. Truth.
Brooklyn Nets: ‘Don’t forget about us’ say the Nets. If you glance further up the standings on the page, that’s where you will find them. First place in the Eastern Conference. And they are doing all this with injuries to Durant and Harden. The highlight of the week was their 109-104 victory over the Celtics Friday night, despite Irving’s poor shooting. Bruce Brown off of the bench electrified the team and the crowd. Durant due back tomorrow.
NY Giants/NJ Jets: We will be doing a special Giants/Jets, and even Buffalo Bills draft review tomorrow, so I’ll keep this real short. It’s all about the Draft, which starts this Thursday, right now. Exciting!
