Checking In… MLB ¼ Season Update

“I’m checking iiiiiiiiin”

While the first 40 games of the MLB season may have sent some fans headed for rehab, this isn’t that kind of check in! It’s hard to believe a quarter of the season has come and gone, and YES, while it is still only May, we can start to see how the rest of the season is going to shape up. Before the season began, I made some predictions (admittedly dumb ones!) just how said season would go. So, first, let’s take a look at the current division leaders against my preseason picks (preseason picks in parenthesis), and then we can get to some quick reactions for the New York Clubs, plus a few surprises.

AL East

Red Sox (Yankees, 2 games back)

AL Central

White Sox (White Sox)

AL West

A’s (A’s)

AL Wild Card

Astros, Blue Jays (Twins, Rays)

NL East

Met’s (Met’s)

NL Central

Cardinals (Cardinals)

NL West

Giants (Dodgers)

NL Wild Card

Padres, Dodgers (Padres, Braves)

Quick Reactions to the First 40 Games:

The Bombers

The Yanks got off to a rough start, but have started to round into shape as of late. Their early struggles have been well documented, but Aaron Judge’s monster week (5 HR and a 1.973 OPS) shows that his offense is rounding into from, and the Yanks will, for sure, be there at the end. They currently only sit 2 games out of first (½ game out of the wildcard), so given their big hiccup out of the gate, I think the fans in the Bronx can exhale and breathe easy knowing that the bombers took a nut punch and got right back up.

The Amazins’

The Mets are siting in first place, however, Mets fans shouldn’t feel quite as good. Jacob deGrom is flat out the best pitcher in baseball (he’s giving me memories of Pedro in ’99, that’s how dominant he has looked), BUT this recent stint on the DL is troubling (Captain Obvious Alert!) Bottom line, the Mets have enough talent to compete, but without deGrom, they will not win the division, let alone make a deep postseason run.

Surprises:

Through 40 games, the season has been stacking up pretty similar to how I predicted (I’m smart and i want respect!), with the the obvious surprises being the Red Sox and Giants. The Red Sox have been a fun, exciting team that I believe will challenge the Yanks until the end. As a baseball fan, having the Red Sox and Yankees both in the hunt has me dreaming of October’s past. Speaking of rivals, Giants/Dodgers is back on the radar! The Giants have found the fountain of youth this season on the offensive side of the ball, and their frontline pitching has been incredible. If the Giants address their bullpen, I can see them challenging the Dodgers for the west coast crown (Sorry Pads). Is it possible we could get a Giants/Dodgers NLCS, AND a Red Sox/Yankees ALCS??? This WOULD be the best case scenario for the game of baseball (not to mention Rob Manfred’s absolute wettest of wet dreams), BUT I’m not ready to give up on my all New York World Series prediction just yet. We still have a long way to go, and a lot can happen by the all-star break, let alone October. As of now, I’m sticking to my guns… Mets-Yanks Sewer Series…
