Ginuts Bytes Week in Review: 04/03/2021

Hi there. Each week (hopefully) I will giving my quick read rundown of what went down in NY sports. This is for people who care about sports, but not all that much, but still want to know what the heck happened and sound somewhat in the know when talking to their friends. You’re welcome.

NY Yankees: Opening day! And well, the Yankees picked up right where they left off last season: Just about every batter at the plate tries to hit a HR. Doesn’t matter if bases are empty, loaded, or if a runner is on 3rd with one out. Some days it’s going to work, others it won’t. Opening day it did not. 10 players LOB. Enough said.

NY Mets: Mets fans will have to wait a bit to see their new face of the franchise, Lindor, in action. Due to Covid, the entire series with the Nationals has been postponed. But the week belonged to Francisco. His 10 year, $341m contract, was the largest ever given to s shortstop. Expectations are sky high for the franchise behind deGrom and Lindor.

NY Rangers: The rollercoaster that is the NYRs continued this week. But the highlight was a nice bounce back win against the Capitals on Tuesday night. After giving up a very late game-tying goal (don’t you just hate those) against the last place Sabres, Mika saved the day in OT with the goal. The Rangers remain in the hunt for the playoffs and now trail the Bruins by 3 points (though the Bruins have 3 games in hand).

NY lslanders: The Isles dropped 2 in a row to the Pens before bouncing back big and destroying the Crapitals 8-4 Thursday night. Barzal continues to be the man for the Isles and leads the team in just about every stat except GAA.

NY Knicks: Knicks have now lost 3 in a row and extra frustratingly gave up big leads against the Timberwolves and Mavs. Randle and RJ are hurting and it definitely showed (the two went a combined 8-31 against the Mavs). The Knicks have now dropped from 5th place to tied with Boston for 7th/8th place in the Eastern Conference. On the bright side, it was nice to see Obi have a nice game in limited action.

Brooklyn Nets: The Eastern Conference All-Star team that is the Brooklyn Nets continued to roll this week and are now 8-2 in their last 10 games. They hold a half game lead aver the Sixers for the #1 seed. Hardin’s revenge game agains the Rockets was cut short by a bad hammy, but no matter, the Nets won anyway, behind 31 points from Kyrie. Durant meanwhile continues to have his own hammy issues and received a $50k pocket change fine for using “offensive and derogatory language on social media”. The event occurred back in December 2020 and was directed at actor Michael Rapaport in response to a Rapport Tweet where Rapaport called Durant “super sensitive about everything”. Anyway, back to sports…

NY Giants: Giants co-owner declared this week that “it’s time for us to start winning”. Woo hoo. Ok guys, you heard the man, let’s pretend we have an offensive line and score more than 17 points a game shall we? Also, I think that the Giants now have 102 former Titans on the team.

NY Jets: BYU QB Zach Wilson’s big pro day all but seemingly solidified his selection by the NY Jets on April 29th. Others believe that OSU QB Justin Fields should be the pick. Regardless, given the Jets’ opportunity cost for staying with the #2 pick (looking at what Miami received from SF to move up the #3 pick), the Jets must REALLY like Wilson. To date, the Jets have not received enough in whatever trade offers they have received for Darnold.

A shoutout must also go to the NCAAW UConn Huskies, who with some controversy (and yes that was a foul), made it to their 13th straight Final Four appearance. That is a crazy feat. They would go on to be shocked by Arizona Friday night. Arizona faces Stanford in the Final.
